Physical Education and Health

In Health and Physical Education, the focus is on the well-being of the students themselves, of other people, and of society through learning in health-related and movement contexts.

The Year 9 and 10 Health programme includes the following units of work: hauora, cyber-bullying and internet safety (mental health), food and nutrition, drug education (body care and physical safety), hei huarahi (sexuality education), relationships and decision making, mate and dates and co-operative games. In Year 9 & 10 Physical Education programme there are opportunities for students to develop interpersonal skills and build self-esteem through varied and challenging physical activities.  The Year 9 option in Outdoor Education provides students with skills that they can then go on to develop in the senior school. Students will participate in activities such as kayaking, surfing, conservation, leadership, trip preparation  and learning about our local environment.

Sports Science is offered at Years 11-13. It combines practical activities and the theory of sport. Main areas of learning include biomechanics, anatomy, exercise physiology, video analysis, risk management, coaching and skilled performance. A highlight of these courses are the Waihi Beach and Whangamata surf camps as well as the student leadership opportunities including Kiwisport coaching.

Health is offered at Year 11-13. In senior classes students learn about a variety of health issues in today’s world. They go on to critically consider these issues to understand how to achieve healthier outcomes in society, including their school and local community.

Outdoor Education courses are available in Years 11 and 12. These courses introduce students to and develop skills in a range of outdoor pursuits available in the local region. The intention is to develop new interests and motivate students to involve themselves in outdoor recreation beyond school. Students become part of a close team, where the development of cooperation, trust and communication with peers and instructors becomes an integral part of the course’s success.

Sport and Recreation is offered at Years 11 and 12. It provides practical learning experiences in sport and physical activity with a strong emphasis on learning through practical participation. This course includes team sports, individual sports and fitness training. This course is designed for students who find the written theory work challenging and the main focus for most students is achieving the standards covered.

Coasties is offered at Year 11 and 12. It is a course that uses riding waves, (eg.surfing, kneeboarding, body surfing, bodyboarding, paddleboarding), as the context for learning. In these courses students access standards from Physical Education, Social Sciences and Technology. This is an exciting new course that will involve some trips to Waihi Beach, Raglan and Whangamata.
