Science

We believe it is essential that all students receive a solid grounding in current scientific understandings, values and skills for them to function in our modern world that is increasingly shaped by the application of Science to nearly every aspect of daily life.

Students at all levels have opportunities to participate in local and international activities and competitions and are actively supported by staff. We are proud of our record of success.

Our Year 7 and 8 students are very privileged, as like the older students, they learn Science in fully equipped laboratories with specialist Science teachers. Science in Years 7 and 8 is focussed on basic Science skills. We aim for students to experience Science as a fun and interesting subject. At Years 9 and 10 this is extended. Students learn how Science ideas are communicated and how to make links between knowledge, decisions and actions. These outcomes are learned through contextual units bringing together relevant understanding and practical investigations from Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Earth and Space Sciences. Strong scientific research skills are embedded.

In Years 11, 12 and 13 Science branches out into Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects. In this way we continue to provide opportunities for choices that meet the needs of career pathways, tertiary providers, and NCEA requirements.
